The Silk Road was an ancient network of trade routes that connected the East and West. It was central to cultural interaction between the regions for many centuries. Till the first half of 20th century before the Chinese invaded Tibet, this old Silk Route was used heavily to trade silk, fur and wool between Tibet and India, and hence such name of the route. The Silk Road derives its name from the lucrative trade in silk carried out along its length, beginning in the Han dynasty (207 BCE–220 CE). Trade on the Road played a significant role in the development of the civilizations of China, Korea,Japan,India, Iran, Afghanistan, Europe, the Horn of Africa and Arabia, opening long-distance political and economic relations between the civilizations. In June 2014, UNESCO designated the Chang'an-Tianshan corridor of the Silk Road as a World Heritage Site. The Indian portion is on the tentative site list. Zuluk is a comparatively new tourist destination of East Sikkim. It’s a small village of 700 population and also offers home stay facilities; with a large military settlement, that gives the Indo-Tibet border a new look. The village itself is an attractive tourist destination for visitors looking for peace of mind. However, for most tourists, Zuluk acts as the base from which tourists explore the higher altitude destinations of Nathang Valley, Kupup and Tsongmo Lake. Nathang Valley has its fair share of history too. The Battle of Nathang marks as an important event towards the British annexation of Tibet. During 1888, the British had despatched military expedition to expel Tibetan forces from Sikkim. At around 07:00 AM on 21 May 1888, the Tibetans attacked the British Defences at Nathang Valley. The battle lasted for around 03 hours and by 10:00 AM the Tibetans retreated. In Zuluk, you can experience the high altitude mountains of Sikkim without traveling to North Sikkim, which requires significant amount of time to travel. Zuluk is a hilltop and transit point within the famous silk route that connects Lhasa (Tibet) to Kalimpong was used a few decades ago until the Chinese invasion of Tibet. It is located at an altitude of 10,100 feet on the jagged terrain of lower Himalayas in East Sikkim.
